From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Manga (kanji: 漫画; hiragana: まんが; katakana: マンガ; listen (help·info); English: /ˈmɑːŋɡə/ or /ˈmæŋɡə/) consist of comics and print cartoons (sometimes also called komikku コミック), in the Japanese language and conforming to the style developed in Japan in the late 19th century. In their modern form, manga date from shortly after World War II, but they have a long, complex pre-history in earlier Japanese art. In Japan, people of all ages read manga. The genre includes a broad range of subjects: action-adventure, romance, sports and games, historical drama, comedy, science fiction and fantasy, mystery, horror, sexuality, and business/commerce, among others. Since the 1950s, manga have steadily become a major part of the Japanese publishing industry, representing a 406 billion yen market in Japan in 2007 (approximately $3.6 billion). Manga have also become increasingly popular worldwide. In 2008, the U.S. and Canadian manga market was $175 million. Manga are typically printed in black-and-white, although some full-color manga exist (e.g. Colorful). In Japan, manga are usually serialized in telephone book-size manga magazines, often containing many stories, each presented in a single episode to be continued in the next issue. If the series is successful, collected chapters may be republished in paperback books called tankōbon. A manga artist (mangaka in Japanese) typically works with a few assistants in a small studio and is associated with a creative editor from a commercial publishing company. If a manga series is popular enough, it may be animated after or even during its run, although sometimes manga are drawn centering on previously existing live-action or animated films (e.g. Star Wars). "Manga" as a term used outside Japan refers specifically to comics originally published in Japan. However, manga-influenced comics, among original works, exist in other parts of the world, particularly in Taiwan ("manhua"), South Korea ("manhwa"), and the People's Republic of China, notably Hong Kong ("manhua"). In France, "la nouvelle manga" has developed as a form of bande dessinée (literally drawn strip) drawn in styles influenced by Japanese manga. In the United States, people refer to manga-like comics as Amerimanga, world manga, or original English-language manga (OEL manga). From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What anime is different from its manga counterpart? Q. I'm talking about rather major changes. For instance: Bleach has its filler arcs, but remains faithful to the manga all the same. However, Full Metal Alchemist split off completely and introduced new characters, ultimately ending long before the manga and in (likely) a completely different fashion. If the anime just left information out of the manga, that's not worth mentioning (too many series do that). I'm looking more for new things appearing in the anime. Asked by Soshi Uso - Tue Feb 10 18:33:51 2009 - - 8 Answers - 2 Comments A. Deathnote is one of these (sort of) they do have the same basic story, but the manga is a lot better. The anime never really achieves the level of greatness that the manga did. I extremly reccommend reading the manga for deathnote. Answered by deathnote7 - Tue Feb 10 18:45:12 2009 Why does a manga series generally take longer to produce than the same anime series? Q. When a manga series gets picked up as a anime, the anime invariably "catches up" to the manga, often forcing the anime to create original filler material to buy time for the manga artist to write more material. Often times, this filler material is inferior to the original story (see Bleach, Naruto, Dragonball Z, the list goes on). So why does it take a comic book longer to produce than an animated cartoon? Asked by Minda - Tue Apr 28 21:07:32 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. I can't agree with all these people saying anime catches up faster because it has more people working on it. That's just stupid. Using that logic, shows like Naruto and Bleach will never catch up to the manga, because both the manga and anime release one chapter and episode per week, respectively. In anime, you need more people to work on it because there's MORE that goes on. For one, there's color. There's voice acting. There's the synchronization between the voices and illustrations. Yes, it helps to have more than three or four artists working on an episode (most mangakas usually draw by themselves or have a small team that draws backgrounds, etc.), but anime episodes also require a LOT more than ~20 pages of drawings. Anime catches… [cont.] Answered by whatever - Thu Apr 30 16:50:34 2009 What is the best manga software out there?
Q. I guess you could say I am a begginner manga artist trying to find the best way to learn the tools of the trade. And I know that purchasing manga software will be a very smart investment. But I don't know what to buy. Is there any manga software out there that could be considered as the industry standard? Asked by Kat - Wed Dec 2 15:45:12 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You don't need any special software when you're just starting out. Any comics you make will only be as good as your own skills, there's no way to cheat with an expensive program. If you're making webcomics, you just something to add text to your speech bubbles. Hell, even MSPaint can be used for that.
