From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Humour or humor (see spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humours (Greek: χυμός, chymos, literally juice or sap, metaphorically, flavour), control human health and emotion. People of all ages and cultures respond to humour. The majority of people are able to experience humour, i.e., to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny, and thus they are considered to have a sense of humour. The hypothetical person lacking a sense of humour would likely find the behaviour induced by humour to be inexplicable, strange, or even irrational. Though ultimately decided by personal taste, the extent to which an individual will find something humorous depends upon a host of variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, intelligence and context. For example, young children may favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons such as Tom and Jerry. Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences. Nonsatirical humour can be specifically termed "recreational drollery". Many theories exist about what humour is and what social function it serves. The prevailing types of theories attempting to account for the existence of humour include psychological theories, the vast majority of which consider humour-induced behaviour to be very healthy; spiritual theories, which may, for instance, consider humour to be a "gift from God"; and theories which consider humour to be an unexplainable mystery, very much like a mystical experience. GNU Free Documentation License Why is humor an important characteristic in a person? Q. I'm doing an essay and need to explain why humor is a somewhat important characteristic in a person. Please help me! A big thanks to those who answer this! Asked by coolcolouredcat - Mon Apr 13 17:02:56 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Ever hear the saying,"laughter is the best medicine"? That's why humor is a very significant characteristic :) Spreading smiles to reduce tears, type of thing. When you have a sense of humor and can easily laugh, or make others laugh easily, it's very comforting for both parties. Laughing can be a release like crying - both are actually very theraputic. Hope this helps - Good luck :) Answered by I laugh, I smile; I take Prozac - Mon Apr 13 17:09:47 2009 How do you regain your humor after you lost them? Q. Q. I dunno if it is just me or not, but i dont think i could imagine being able to stay with someone if they didnt laugh at the things that i laugh at. Or, if i could not make them laugh or they could not make me laugh. I just think that humor is a larger factor than most people think. Do you think i am right about this? We get along great when we're being serious... but when he tries to be funny I just get irritated. We could never be together for that simple reason. The theatrical genre can be simply described as a dramatic performance pitting two societies against each other in an amusing agon or conflict. Comedy contains variations on the elements of surprise, incongruity, conflict, repetitiveness, and the effect of opposite expectations, and there are many recognized genres. Sourced
